About Toronto Public Health Emergency Planning and Preparedness
Toronto Public Health partners with other city divisions to be prepared for and respond to an emergency.
When there is an emergency or disaster, Toronto Public Health (TPH) takes action.
Some things Toronto Public Health does during an emergency
Plays a lead role in responses to communicable disease outbreaks
Checks the environment to make sure the air, soil and water is safe
Maintains food safety and sanitation for the community
Helps people with special needs
Offers counselling for stress and coping problems
Assists with emergency dental treatment
Monitors conditions in evacuation centres when they are established
Supports Toronto's Office of Emergency Management when major accidents involving chemical spills or fires, and severe weather emergencies happen (e.g. ice storm)
Provides expert public health advice to the city, local doctors and hospitals when a nuclear, biological or chemical event, or natural disaster occurs
The Emergency Planning and Preparedness (EPP) section in Toronto Public Health is responsible for keeping TPH prepared to respond to an emergency.
