Be prepared
Pack a basic survival kit with supplies you'll need for at least 3 days, along with your emergency phone numbers.

Emergency workers may not get to you right away - first they help those most in need.

Basic survival kit
Get information about how to prepare your basic survival kit:
Remember to:
  • Replace or rotate through your bottled water every 6 months
  • Choose foods that are nutritious and that you like, for your particular needs
  • Pack foods that are canned, packaged, dried or in jars
  • Include baby food in small jars if you have infants
Make sure all the items in your basic survival kit are packed, ready to use or to take with you. Remember to prepare for your pet.

Pack your basic kit items in something that is easy to carry, like a backpack, plastic bin, duffel bag or suitcase with wheels.

Keep your basic survival kit in an easy-to-reach spot - somewhere you and all your family knows, like a front hall closet.

For emergencies call 911. Teach all your family members, including children, how and when to call 911.

My Emergency Phone Numbers and Meeting Places.
Fill in important numbers and information on the card and keep it with you.

Plan to meet your family at a safe place that's away from the emergency. Emergency workers or local officials may tell you to go to an evacuation centre - follow authorities' instructions.

Fill out and keep this card with you. Make a card for every family member to keep with them in a purse, wallet or backpack - something they carry with them every day.

Keep a card in your family basic survival kit so you have these important numbers with you in an emergency.
