* * Your Family Escape Plan *
* *
Make a plan with your family, and practice it. Include your emergency phone numbers.

Take time now to be prepared for an emergency.

Make a family escape plan

In a fire or other emergency, you may need to leave your home fast.

Every family member should know what to do in case they need to escape, or if emergency workers or local officials tell you to evacuate. For more information see the Toronto Public Health Emergency Guide.

Know:
  • Where the exits are at your home, including stairways and windows. Plan two escape routes
  • Know where your fire extinguishers are located and how to use them
  • Where your basic survival kit and first aid kit is located
  • Where your family meeting place is and your family emergency phone numbers
Draw a plan (PDF) of every floor of your home.

Review your escape routes and evacuation plan with every family member so they know what to do in case of an emergency.

Identify hazards in your home
Know what they are and reduce them. Practice good housekeeping.
  • Keep stairs and areas near doors clear of clutter. Don't leave items where you can trip over them
  • Keep a fire extinguisher on each level of your home e.g. in the kitchen, upstairs besides the bedrooms and in the basement
  • If something is broken e.g. a door handle or window latch, fix it
In an emergency call 911
Teach your children and every family member how to call 911 to contact the Ambulance, Fire and Police if there is an emergency.

BE PREPARED. REMAIN CALM. BE SAFE.
