Tritium is a form of radioactive hydrogen. It is produced naturally in the earth's atmosphere however it is also produced by humans. Important human-made sources are nuclear reactors used in the production of energy.
Ontario's current standard is 7, 000 Becquerels per Litre (Bq/L) for Tritium in Drinking Water. In 2006 Toronto's Medical Officer of Health asked the province of Ontario to adopt a stricter standard. The Ontario Drinking Water Advisory Council is now reviewing the need for a better standard.
The documents below represent Toronto Public Health's position on Tritium in water.
