When used safely, medication can contribute to better health and quality of life Remember that all medications are drugs:

  • Prescription
  • Over-the-counter
  • Herbal remedies
  • Vitamins and minerals
Tips to take your medication safely:
  • Take medication as directed
  • Never change the dose without consulting with your doctor
  • Check expiry dates twice a year. Never use expired medication
  • Return extra or expired medication to your pharmacist
  • Keep your medication in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight
  • Never keep medication in the kitchen or bathroom. Heat and moisture may damage the medication
  • Keep medication in a secure spot, out of the reach of children
  • Don't share, lend or borrow medication
  • Carry a medication record with you at all times
  • Take your medication with water
  • Finish all of your medication unless your doctor tells you not to
  • Avoid mixing alcohol and medication

Know your risks. Get the facts:
The average senior in Ontario takes six prescription medications and three over-the-counter medications a day.

These medications combined can cause harmful interactions. Interactions can make a drug stronger, weaker or mixed together may cause unwanted side effects.

About one in five Ontario seniors are hospitalized each year for drug interaction problems.
