There's a lot for kids to do and to remember when riding. They need to balance, steer, be aware of others around them and make quick decisions about obstacles in their path, including vehicles.
Tips for parents to decide when their child over 10 is ready to ride on the road:
- Has control of the equipment
- Can ride in a straight line
- Follows the safety rules
- Shows good judgment and traffic skills
Safe Kids Canada advises that children 10 years of age and under should not ride on the road.
Children 10 years and under:
- Have limited vision out of the corners of their eyes and may not see cars approaching.
- May not be able to decide how fast a vehicle is travelling and whether they can cross the road safely.
- Think that if they can see a driver, the driver can see them.
- May be impulsive, have trouble waiting for lights and could suddenly ride out onto the road.
- May have trouble judging the directions from which noises are coming, such as sirens or car horns.
- May not be able to judge if a motorist will stop or drive through a stop sign, crosswalk or street light. It is difficult for children to see and be seen by drivers because of their size and impulsivity.
