It is very easy to fall from in−line skates. Children need a lot of practice to develop the skills and decision making to safely use in−line skates.
Safety tips for parents and children
Teach children how to:
- Balance, control speed, turn and stop safely
- Be aware that it is difficult to control speed and stop on wet surfaces
- Avoid riding where there are pedestrians and vehicles
Make sure children wear the safety equipment including:
- A certified in−line skating or multi-sport helmet
- Wrist gaurds, elbow and knee pads
Do a safety check of the in-line skates and equipment:- Is the equipment the right size for their body and matched according to their skill level?
- Does the skate fit as comfortably as a shoe?
- Help children check that their in-line skate wheels are securely tightened and free of debris/grass.
- Replace worn out wheels.
- Determine that the brake is not loose or worn out.
Make sure children use their in-line skates safely:
- In-line skate away from traffic
- Avoid wearing headphones or using cell phones while in-line skating
- Teach children to never grab onto a moving car, bike or other vehicle
- Consider providing lessons for your child to increase skills and knowledge
- Be a good role model − wear a helmet and safety gear when you in-line skate. Children copy what adults do.
