Parents need to closely watch children to prevent them fom riding out onto the street from the sidewalk.

Safety tips for parents and children

Teach your child how to:
  • Control speed and turn safely
  • Avoid riding where there are pedestrians and vehicles

Scooter
Make sure children wear the safety equipment including:
  • A certified bike helmet
  • Elbow and knee pads
  • Closed, slip resistant shoes
Do a safety check of the scooter:
  • Is your child's scooter the right size for their body and matched according to their skill level?
  • Are the handlebars the right height? Children should be able to hold the handlebars without leaning forward.
  • Are the brakes in good working order?
  • Help children check that the wheels are securely tightened, clear of debris/grass and not worn down.
  • Replace worn out wheels.
Make sure your child uses a scooter safely:
  • Ride scooters away from traffic, in safe places like parks and school yards, where allowed.
  • Avoid wearing headphones or using cell phones while riding a scooter.
  • Watch for cars entering or leaving driveways or lanes.
  • Always walk scooters across the street intersections and cross walks, instead of riding.
  • Ride on smooth, dry, or paved surfaces.
  • Be a good role model - wear a helmet and safety gear when you ride. Children copy what adults do.
