Shoes with wheels, roller shoes and street gliders are shoes that convert to roller skates.
Children can easily fall from these types of shoes.
Safety tips for parents and children
Teach children how to balance, step, plant and kick and stop.
- To balance kids can:
- Hold onto an adult
- Practise putting one foot in front of the other
- Lift toes up, shift weight back onto the heels and pull oneself along
- Practise recovering balance by putting the toes down
- To step, plant and kick kids can:
- Take a second step forward with the other foot and plant the wheel with the toe up
- Kick or push off with the back foot
- Raise the back toe with weight balanced on the wheel
- Roll and place the back foot directly behind the front foot (both toes raised)
- To stop kids can:
- Lift the toes of the back foot higher to drag the heel of the shoe on the ground and gradually slow down
- Transfer weight to the front foot on both feet and "jog"
Make sure children wear the safety equipment including:
- A certified bike helmet
- Wrist, elbow and knee pads
Do a safety check of the shoes with wheels:
- Help children check that the wheels are securely tightened, clear of debris/grass and not worn down.
Make sure your child uses wheeled shoes safely:
- Ride away from traffic in safe places like parks and school yards.
- Ride on smooth, dry, or paved surfaces.
- Teach children to never grab onto a moving car, bike or other vehicle.
- Be a good role model - wear a helmet and safety gear when you ride. Children copy what adults do.
