A 10 minute classroom workout towards Daily Physical Activity Resource for Teachers
A 10 minute classroom workout towards Daily Physical Activity

Moving on the Spot supports Daily Physical Activity. Each session is ten minutes and can be used in the classroom, gym, or any small space. Each "Moving on the Spot" session includes the components of a full physical activity workout: warm -up, stretching, cardiovascular and muscle strengthening activities and cool down.

Tips for Teachers
  • Moving on the Spot is a 10 Minute vigorous exercise session that can be implemented in the classroom to help meet the requirements for daily phisical activity.
  • There are 2 sessions: one on the front and one on the back of the poster.
  • It is important to do all sections in a session to ensure a proper warm-up, workout, cool down and stretch.
  • Teachers are encouraged to adapt as necessary to the skill level and age of the students.
  • Some exercises can be lowered in intensity by substituting jogging on the spot with a brisk march, or lowering the intensity of jumps (e.g. modified jumping jacks).
  • Exercises geared towards younger aged children (e.g., popcorn, kangaroo jumps, frog jumps) can easily be substituted with options on the other side of the poster or through modification of the exercise (e.g., frog jumps can be re-named squat jumps for older students).
  • The duration of the Heart Pumping portion of the workout can be increased by doing one or more activities on the flip side of the poster.
  • Variation of DPA activities is important and Moving on the Spot is not a resource that should be used everyday (kids will soon tire of it).
  • Any age appropriate up tempo music should be used to enhance the sessions.
  • For teachers leading students through this resource, please note: Moving on the Spot has not been tested for safe use during pregnancy. Though most women are able to exercise throughout the course of their pregnancies, they are advised to consult with their obstetric care providers prior to leading this (or any other) exercise routine.
