Prenatal Programs

Toronto Public Health offers the following free individual and group based prenatal programs to support pregnant women in Toronto. Programs are facilitated by Public Health Nurses and/or Registered Dietitians.

Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP)

Who can attend the program?

The program is for women who are:

  • pregnant
  • living in Toronto
  • facing challenging life situations, such as hunger during pregnancy, recent arrival to Canada, previous premature or low birth weight births, and difficulty accessing health care.

What does the program offer?

CPNP is a weekly prenatal program that provides group based and individual support and education from Public Health Nurses and Registered Dietitians in collaboration with community partners.

Topics include:

  • having a healthy pregnancy
  • healthy eating during pregnancy
  • basic labour and birth
  • breastfeeding
  • becoming a parent

The program may also provide:

  • interpreters
  • healthy snacks
  • food certificates
  • prenatal vitamins
  • child care
  • TTC tokens

The program is offered at 39 sites across Toronto. Partners or other support persons are welcome.

CPNP is a national prenatal program funded in part by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). Toronto Public Health is one of the partner agencies.

Having a Baby, Becoming a Parent

This program is being replaced with a new online prenatal program which will be available in late 2012.

Healthiest Babies Possible

Who can attend the program?

The program is for women who are:

  • less than 7 months pregnant
  • at-risk of having a low birth weight baby
  • living in Toronto

What does the program offer?

The Healthiest Babies Possible program is a confidential prenatal nutrition program where Registered Dietitians provide one-to-one nutrition counselling and education to pregnant women.

Topics include:

  • healthy eating during pregnancy
  • healthy weight gain during pregnancy
  • tips for feeling your best
  • caution foods and drinks

The program also provides:

  • food certificates
  • prenatal and multivitamin supplements
  • linking and referrals to Public Health Nursing and community resources

The program is available at over 65 locations across Toronto.

Teen Prenatal Program

Who can attend the program?

The program is for young women who are:

  • pregnant
  • teens to early 20s
  • living in Toronto

What does the program offer?

Teen Prenatal Program is a weekly prenatal program that provides group-based and individual support and education from Public Health Nurses and Registered Dietitians in collaboration with community partners.

Topics include:

  • having a healthy baby
  • healthy eating during pregnancy
  • taking care of yourself
  • body changes
  • getting back to school
  • finding affordable housing

The program may also provide:

  • healthy snacks
  • food certificates
  • prenatal vitamins
  • child care
  • TTC token
  • linking and referrals to other community resources

The teen program is offered at several sites across Toronto. Partners and other support persons are welcome.

The Teen Prenatal Program is part of the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP), a national prenatal program funded in part by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). Toronto Public Health is one of the partner agencies.
