Condoms work best when they are put on before the penis touches any bare skin around the genitals. They will not break as often if these steps are followed:
- Get a few different kinds of condoms and practise putting them on an erect (hard) penis. Guys can masturbate into the condom to get used to that feeling. Some condoms will fit better than others.
- Personal lubricant helps to keep a condom from breaking. Use only water-based lubricant like KY Jelly or Astroglide. Oil-based products like Vaseline can cause breaks.
- Check the expiry date of the condom packet before opening it.
- Open the package carefully: push the condom out of the way and tear down the side of the packet.
- Check which way the condom unrolls on your fingers, not the penis.
- It feels good to put a drop of lubricant inside the condom. If you don't, pinch the tip of the condom before you unroll it. This takes out the air and leaves room for the semen (cum).
- If a guy is not circumcised, pull back the foreskin first
- Unroll the condom onto the erect penis all the way down to the base.
- If the condom is not lubricated, put some lubricant on the outside of the condom. For anal sex, you need a lot of lubricant.
- After ejaculation (cumming), hold onto the condom at the base of the penis and pull out of your partner. Don't wait until the penis gets soft.
- Throw the condom away in the garbage.
Store your condoms in a cool, dry place. If you or your partner has an allergy to latex, you can buy polyurethane (plastic) condoms.
