A water pipe is also known as a 'hookah', 'shisha', 'nargile/narghila', 'hubble-bubble', 'goza' and 'argileh'.

Water pipe smoking (inhaling flavoured tobacco through a hose, also known as a hookah smoking) has become more popular in the past few years, especially among youth.

But water pipes are not safe to smoke. The water does not filter out all the toxins, and the nicotine in the tobacco is addictive.

Several types of cancer and gum disease have been linked to water pipe smoking. Since water pipe smoking often lasts longer than smoking a cigarette, the risks (especially from second-hand smoke) may be much higher with hookah smoking. As well, the addiction to nicotine can increase the risk of cigarette smoking.

Read the Hookah/water pipe smoking fact sheet (PDF) for more information.
