about TB prevention unit Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that affects us all. The Tuberculosis Prevention & Control Program works with the community to reduce the incidence and impact of TB in Toronto.

Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention and Control Program is divided into the following specialty teams:

Case Management Teams

  • Manage TB disease in the general population
  • Ensure adequate TB treatment is received and completed
  • Follow-up of individuals exposed to TB
  • Educate clients and contacts
  • Order TB medication for clients with TB disease and contacts with TB infection

Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) Teams

  • Ensure clients take medication correctly
  • Monitor for side effects
  • Prevent/Reduce drug resistance caused by interrupted drug therapy
  • Collaborates with Case Management Teams regarding client care

Homeless/Underhoused Outreach Team works to decrease TB transmission within shelters and drop-in centres

  • Active TB disease case finding
  • Manage TB disease and infection in the homeless/underhoused population
  • Ensure adequate TB treatment is received and completed
  • Follow-up of individuals exposed to TB
  • Educate shelters, drop-in centers, clients and contacts

Prevention Team

  • Health promotion and community development
  • Outreach to populations at higher risk for TB disease and health care providers
  • Create target appropriate multi-language resource material for clients and health care providers
  • Partner with internal/external agencies with a goal to eliminate TB

Correctional Team

  • Manage TB disease and infection in the corrections population
  • Ensure adequate TB treatment is received and completed
  • Coordinate TB follow-up upon discharge from correctional facilities
  • Liaise with Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and other Toronto Public Health programs
  • Educate within correctional facilities

Medical Surveillance and Drug Order Team
(Immigration and Routine Surveillance)

  • Immigrants, refugees, visitors, visa students/workers identified through immigration surveillance are monitored for TB disease
  • Monitor clients with TB infection identified through routine surveillance
  • Order TB medication for clients with TB infection on immigration and routine surveillance
  • Order TB medication for Toronto physicians whose clients live outside of Toronto
