World TB Day 2006
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes March 24th as World Tuberculosis (TB) Day. Each year, the TB Prevention and Control Program plans initiatives to raise awareness, decrease stigma and help reduce the impact of TB in Toronto.
This year, activities include:
Multi-Language TB Resources
The TB Prevention and Control Program launched our new series of translated TB resources. The resources have been placed on a CD and mailed out to all Toronto health care facilities (hospitals), Community Health Centres and health units across Ontario. Languages include: Chinese, Vietnamese, Farsi, Urdu, Tagalog, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Somali, Tamil, Hindi, Korean, Punjabi and English.
Outreach to Physicians
Physicians play a key role in the diagnosis, treatment and management of TB. The TB Prevention and Control Program has created a Quick Reference for TB Skin Testing. This guideline was distributed in the February issue of the Toronto Public Health physician newsletter called the Communiqué. The guideline focuses on the difference between 2 step and contact follow-up TB skin testing.
Settlement Workers Workshop
This is the 3rd annual workshop organized by the TB Prevention and Control Program to increase awareness of TB for agencies serving newcomers to Toronto. This free half-day workshop is scheduled for April 6th at the Scarborough Civic Centre. Participants will learn how mental health, nutrition, employment and TB affect newcomers to our community.
Health Care Facilities (Hospitals)
Hospitals are often the first place a TB patient will go for medical care. They play a key role in the early diagnosis and treatment of TB. Toronto Public Health staff will be conducting information sessions at various hospitals in Toronto. The focus of these presentations will be TB trends in Toronto, airborne precautions and the hospitals' role in staff and volunteer TB surveillance.
TB Display
The TB Prevention and Control Program will be launching our new TB display during the months of March and April. The display will be at various health care facilities and Toronto civic centers. The display focuses on the creation and maintenance of partnerships working together to eliminate TB and the role of the Toronto Public Health's TB Prevention and Control Program.
Chinese Media Outreach
The TB Prevention and Control Program is collaborating with the Toronto Chinese Health and Education Committee (TCHEC) to provide TB information to the Chinese community through Chinese media.
The TB Prevention and Control Program aims to optimize the health of our community by working together in prevention, control and reduction of TB in Toronto.
