World TB Day 2007 (PDF file size 1.1MB)
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes March 24th as World Tuberculosis (TB) Day. Each year, Toronto Public Health plans initiatives to raise awareness, build and strengthen partnerships and provide culturally appropriate services to help reduce the impact of TB in Toronto.
Activities in 2007 include:
Settlement Workers Workshop
This is the 4th year we have arranged Settlement Workers Workshops. Four city-wide workshops have been organized by Toronto Public Health with our new partners from Toronto Social Services and Toronto Library Services. Participants will learn about accessing programs for newcomers including employment, nutrition, mental health, TB and library services.
TB Article For Newcomer Populations
A TB article which includes a case scenario and key TB messages will be sent to the ethnic press for World TB Day. The intention is to raise awareness about TB and health services for newcomer populations.
TB Skin Test Workshops
Ten TB skin testing workshops for nursing staff working in hospitals and long-term care facilities are being held. The workshops provided information on TB infection and TB disease, a video on skin testing and opportunities for participants to practise the administration and reading of skin tests on practice arms.
TB Skin Test Poster
(PDF file size 310KB)
A poster outlining how to administer, read and interpret TB skin tests has been developed for health care professionals.
TB Skin Test Ruler
(PDF file size 31KB)
A ruler was created to assist health care professionals to accurately measure TB skin tests and to remind everyone that positive skin tests are reportable to public health.
Hospital Outreach
Many hospitals have requested World TB Day displays or presentations. The displays will focus on partnerships to eliminate TB and the role of Toronto Public Health's TB Prevention and Control Program. Various presentations are being provided by TB public health nurses and one of the Associate Medical Officers of Health is presenting at several hospital rounds on topics such as TB & Homelessness and TB & HIV.
