World TB Day 2008

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes March 24th as World Tuberculosis (TB) Day. Each year, Toronto Public Health plans initiatives to raise awareness, build and strengthen partnerships and provide culturally appropriate services to help reduce the impact of TB in Toronto.

Activities in 2008 included:
  • Information Sessions for Agencies Assisting Newcomers (PDF file size 35KB) - Two full-day information sessions organized by Toronto Public Health (TPH) with our partners from Toronto Social Services, Toronto Library Services and Parks, Forestry and Recreation. Participants will learn about accessing programs for newcomers including employment, nutrition, mental health, child health, tuberculosis, library services and parks and recreation. Displays of information from Dental Services, Tobacco Use Prevention, Immunization, Enterprise Toronto, Children's Services and Toronto Community Housing Corporation will also be available.

  • TB Article for Newcomer Populations - An article focusing on TB Immigration Medical Surveillance will be sent to the ethnic press for World TB Day. The intention is to raise awareness about TB and accessing health services for newcomer populations.

  • TB Skin Test Workshops - Four TB skin test workshops for nursing staff working in long term care facilities will be delivered. The workshops will provide information on TB infection and disease, a video on skin testing and opportunities for participants to practise the administration and reading of skin tests on practice arms.

  • TB Displays, Skin Test Workshops and Presentations to Various Hospitals in Toronto - The focus will be on partnerships to eliminate TB and the role of Toronto Public Health's TB Prevention and Control Program. Our Associate Medical Officer of Health will also be presenting at several hospital education sessions on TB topics including TB & HIV.

  • Social Networking to Enhance TB Contact Tracing Workshop - TPH is collaborating with the Public Health Agency of Canada and Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to provide a 1.5 day workshop. Public health staff, health information analysts and epidemiologists from across Ontario will explore how to incorporate social network analysis in the investigation of TB transmission.

  • Infectious Disease Control Training Initiative Sponsored by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) - TPH is providing consultation on the infectious disease content of CIC training sessions. The CIC training is for frontline workers and volunteers supporting the resettlement of refugees when they first arrive in Canada.
