Did you know?
Pears are an excellent source of fibre and a source of vitamin C and potassium. Look for locally grown pears in the winter and fall season. One medium sized pear is equal to one vegetable and fruit serving.
Buying
- Choose firm pears with smooth skins, a sweet smell and no bruises.
Storing
- Ripen hard pears at room temperature. A ripe pear is firm but gives a little when pressed gently.
- Store ripe pears in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
Preparing
- Wash pears under cold water. Eat them raw, cooked or dried.
- For use in desserts, pears are often poached, simmered or baked.
