At its meeting of April 23 and 24, 2007, Toronto City Council identified the Cabbagetown Northwest Heritage Conservation District Study Area and established a study advisory committee consisting of property owners and members of the Cabbagetown Preservation Association to study the proposed district. The purpose of a Heritage Conservation District is to maintain the heritage character of a neighbourhood by requiring certain physical alterations, demolition, and new construction within the District to conform to guidelines.

The proposed district was also discussed at a community meeting held by City Planning staff on April 19, 2007. Strong community support was expressed at this meeting. Should the district be approved it would join the Cabbagetown-Mecalfe, Cabbagetown North, and the Cabbagetown South districts as the fourth heritage conservation district in the neighbourhood.

In September 2007 City Planning staff completed the Draft Cabbagetown Northwest Conservation District Plan. Staff presented the draft plan to the study advisory who subsequently approved the plan. Staff will be recommending that Toronto City Council designate the area under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act as the Cabbagetown Northwest Heritage Conservation District. A staff report with these recommendations will be considered by the Toronto Preservation Board at their meeting of November 9, 2007 at Toronto City Hall in Committee Room 2 at 2:00 p.m. To assist in scheduling, if you plan to speak at this meeting please register with:

The staff report will also be considered by the Toronto and East York Community Council at their meeting of November 27, 2007.
