For the third year in a row, 13 year-old Avinash Balsingh gathered donations and purchased blankets and comforters to give to newly housed Streets to Homes clients as housewarming gifts. On a cold day in January, Avinash and his mom and dad delivered their 40 bundles to the delight of clients on hand to receive them at the 112 Elizabeth Street office. He also brought along a cash contribution of $352 for the “I want to help” fund which donates money to not-for-profit agencies working with the City to deliver the Streets to Homes program. A variety of coats, sweaters and winter wear were also presented.
Agnes McNeil and Brian Brodie, two formerly homeless people who were helped by Streets to Homes to find permanent housing, were on hand to let Avinash know how his actions are really making a difference. Shaking his hand and giving him a hug, Brian said, “Thank you, man. It warms my heart to know there are people like you helping folks when they need it”. Agnes smiled and offered her thanks as well.
At the age of 10, Avinash first took action by collecting household items from friends, neighbours, his school and community. He collected and donated many items, including blankets, pillows and comforters. This year he created an“Adopt-a-Comforter” campaign, where individuals could contribute money and Avinash purchased a comforter on their behalf.

Streets to Homes Manager Gord Tanner gives a certificate of appreciation to Avinash Balsingh for his volunteer efforts
TVO Kids caught wind of Avinash’s initiative and its film crew followed him to the Streets to Homes office as part a day-long taping of his activities for broadcast at a later date.
“I have nothing but admiration for Avinash,” said Gord Tanner, Manager of Streets to Homes. “Volunteers are an important part of the Streets to Homes success. And Avinash is a young man who proves once again that one person really can make a difference.”
