Toronto SMIS is a web-based system that helps shelter staff provide better client service while delivering the real-time data that enhances the City's ability to manage Toronto's emergency shelter system.
SMIS eliminated time-consuming manual tasks and paper forms streamlining shelter operations and improving client services. Shelter staff can now quickly find available beds throughout the system and speed up client intake, admission and discharge.
Congratulations to SSHA's SMIS team winners!
The Shelter Management Information System project team won the Outstanding Team Award from the City of Toronto's IT Awards of Excellence 2011.
Shelter, Support and Housing Administration assembled a 10-person, divisional project team to develop the Shelter Management Information System (SMIS). This team, seven from the IT unit and three from Hostel Services, worked closely with the vendor to guarantee that the product was both excellent and met the requirements of the Division.
The team also worked diligently alongside over 1,200 users at 57 shelter sites across Toronto. SMIS implementation included IT infrastructure upgrades at all shelters and user training. This ended the labour-intensive paper-based system of "pinks". The Division now benefits from web-based application assisting in the management and administration of the Toronto shelter system and 57 other shelter operations.
