Background
The Labour Force Survey provides estimates of the size of the labour
force, total employed persons, unemployment rates and labour force
participation rates. It is produced by Statistics Canada on a monthly
basis, and is the most important economic indicator that is available
for sub-provincial areas in Canada.
The Labour Force Survey is a household-based survey, so it shows employment
by place of residence not by place of work. A worker who lives in
Oakville and works in downtown Toronto appears as an employed person
in Oakville, not in Toronto. According to the 2006 census, the City
of Toronto is a net importer of labour. More people work in the City
of Toronto than there are employed City of Toronto residents.
Labour Force Survey estimates are produced for Canada, the provinces,
and a large number of sub-provincial regions. The sample size for
the Greater Toronto Area is approximately 2,800 households.
In addition to labour force activity, the Labour Force Survey captures
age, gender, educational attainment, employment income, industry and
occupation. The Labour Force Survey also contains several variables
that are not available from the census, these include: unionization
status, size of employment establishment, length of job tenure, as
well as reasons for unemployment.
