*Location quotients measure how specialized a geographic area is in a particular industry. The location quotient is defined as the ratio of an industry’s share of the local economy to that industry’s share of the Canadian economy. A location quotient near 1 indicates an average level of specialization, below 1 is below average, and above 1 is above average.

In 2010, 7.6% of the employed labour force in the Toronto CMA worked in Finance and Insurance; the comparable figure for the national economy was 4.6%. Therefore, the location quotient for Finance and Insurance in the Toronto CMA was 1.64, indicating that the Toronto CMA has a strong specialization in financial services.
