Glossary of Terms

Archaeological Potential

Archaeological potential is defined within the City of Toronto's Archaeological Management Plan as land which may contain archaeological resources or sites. Soil disturbance activities associated with public works and infrastructure projects in areas of archaeological potential should be subject to an archaeological resource assessment in advance of construction. The assessment will evaluate the significance of any resources encountered and outline measures to mitigate possible impacts. Basement Flooding (Linear & Site)

To help reduce flooding risk in areas prone to basement flooding. May include upgrades to the existing storm sewer system, such as installing new pipes, or replacing existing pipes with larger pipes, the installation of dry ponds or underground storage tanks, and other improvements to the sewer system.

These projects also slow down the flow of water and allow it to seep into the ground. Water Service Replacement Program

The planned replacement of the city-owned portion of substandard water service connections in coordination with other programs. Two access pits are excavated - one at the property line and one at the watermain. The new service connection is installed between these two pits. The property owner is encouraged to replace the private portion of substandard water service connection at the same time.

Watermain Rehabilitation

Watermain Cathodic Protection

Extends the service life of existing metallic watermains by reducing external pipe corrosion, a primary cause of watermain deterioration. Involves attaching a metal rod to the watermain so that the rod corrodes instead of the pipe.

Watermain Clean and Cement Mortar Lining

Removing build-up from the inside of older watermains, relining the internal pipe with a thin layer of cement, as well as replacing fire hydrants and water valves. Addresses issues such as low water pressure, low water flow or rusty water and improves system performance. Construction includes the excavation of pits to access the inside of the pipe. During construction, water service is maintained through an above-ground pipe or by-pass.
