Fort York Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge - Environmental Assessment
The City of Toronto, Waterfront Secretariat is initiating a study to determine the preferred option and preliminary design details for a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the rail way corridor west of Fort York. The project will commemorate the Bi-Centennial of the War of 1812. Construction is anticipated in time for bicentennial celebrations in 2012.
MTI Chamber Upgrades
Eleven chambers along the Mid Toronto Interceptor sewage collection system will be upgraded and automated in 2009. Instrumentation located both underground and in above-ground panels will be installed, repaired or replaced. Construction crews will typically be on-site most days in compliance with noise by-laws and sites will be cleared nightly; some traffic lane modifications will be necessary. Transit City Project – Sheppard Avenue East Light Rail Transit (LRT) Class Environmental Assessment Study
The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) are examining ways to significantly improve transit service on Sheppard Avenue East between Don Mills Subway Station and Morningside Avenue, and potentially as far east as Meadowvale Road.
Transit City Project – Waterfront West Streetcars Environmental Assessment
The TTC is proposing two studies to evaluate potential transit expansions in the Western Waterfront. Studies will investigate the following expansions: 1) Exhibition Place to Dufferin Street and 2) Dufferin Street to the Roncesvalles Avenue and Queen Street West intersection.
Transit City Project – Proposed Extension of the Scarborough Rapid Transit
The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission are assessing ways to significantly improve the transit service to the north and east of the Scarborough City Centre.
Transit Project – Kingston Road/Danforth Avenue: Preliminary Planning for a Transit Project Assessment Study
The City of Toronto and the TTC are proceeding with a study to identify potential transit improvements along the Kingston Road Corridor. The study will investigate how to best improve transit service along Kingston Road between Victoria Park and Eglinton Avenue East. It will also look at ways of integrating existing streetcar service along Kingston Road with other transit services in the area.
Transit Project – The St. Clair Avenue West Transit Improvement Project
The St. Clair Avenue West Transit Improvement Project consists of the construction of a dedicated right-of-way for streetcars that will improve transit frequency and reliability, along with urban design enhancements and public art along sections of the road. McNicoll Avenue Reconstruction Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study
The City of Toronto is undertaking a Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for the reconstruction and widening of McNicoll Avenue from 130 m west of Victoria Park Avenue to Highway 404.
The Don River and Central Waterfront Project
The City has launched a project to improve water quality in the Lower Don River and the Inner Harbour. The management of stormwater and combined sewer overflows, determining necessary infrastructure improvements and planning for anticipated growth are all key aspects of the study. Toronto Mayor David Miller has launched a campaign to have handguns banned in Canada. The campaign's centre-piece is an online petition which will enable Canadians from coast to coast to coast to join the call for a Canada-wide handgun ban.
Waterfront Community Improvement Plans (CIP's)
Community Improvement Plans (CIPs) enable municipalities to provide financial incentives to property owners to support the improvement and rehabilitation of their areas. The City is preparing CIPs to support economic development in the Waterfront and the South of Eastern Employment District. Public consultation is an important part of this initiative.
Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Scarborough Waterfront CSO and Stormwater Outfall Control Study
The City of Toronto has initiated a Municipal Class EA study to identify the methods for controlling nine CSO and stormwater outfalls discharging into the Scarborough waterfront.
City Council approves plan for two new organic processing facilities within Toronto
Due to strong participation in the Green Bin Program and the plan to expand this organics collection program to more users, City Council, at its June 2007 meeting, approved building and siting two new facilities to process Green Bin organic material. Each facility will be capable of processing 55,000 tonnes of organic material bringing the City’s processing capacity within city borders up to 110,000 tonnes a year.
