Project Update

Notice of Completion
The City of Toronto has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study to identify measures to treat stormwater run-off that drains from the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) into the Don River. The study area spans from the Gardiner Expressway to the junction of the East Don River and Taylor-Massey Creek. The aim of the project is to improve water quality in the Lower Don River.

Background
Stormwater is runoff from rain or melting snow. As it flows over roads, such as the DVP, it picks up dirt, oil, salt and other pollutants that eventually end up in the Don River.

Study Purpose
The purpose of this study is to improve the Don River’s water quality through enhanced stormwater management controls for drainage from the Don Valley Parkway and ensure compatibility with the natural ecosystem.

The Process
The study is being undertaken in accordance with the planning and design process for ‘Schedule B’ projects as outlined in the Municipal Engineers Association Municipal Class EA process (October 2000, as amended in 2007).

The process requires public and review agency consultation, an evaluation of alternative solutions, and the identification of ways to reduce any adverse impacts from the work.
