Starting July 26, 2010, the City of Toronto Technical Services and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will undertake major construction work on Parliament Street from just south of Gerrard Street East to just south of King Street East as well as on King Street East and Queen Street East in the vicinity of Parliament Street.
The work will involve reconstruction of the road, TTC streetcar track, traffic signals, and some curb, sidewalk and streetscape (e.g. plantings and seatwall).
Work is scheduled to begin on Parliament Street from south of Shuter Street and proceed south to King Street, with the remaining work between Gerrard Street and Shuter Street to follow thereafter.

Traffic Restrictions
During TTC track reconstruction vehicle traffic will be limited:
- Parliament Street, southbound lane closed (one northbound lane open) from King Street to Gerrard Street
- King Street East, eastbound lane closed (one westbound lane open) from Power Street to Ontario Street
- Queen Street East, eastbound lane closed (one westbound lane open) from Power Street to Berkeley Street
At other stages of construction one lane will be maintained in each direction.
The following scheduled intersection closures will occur:
- Queen and Parliament streets: Closed Friday, July 30 at 6:00am; Re-Opens Monday, August 16 at 6:00am
- Richmond and Parliament streets: Closed Friday, August 20 at 9:30am; Re-Opens Monday, August 23 at 6:00am
- Adelaide and Parliament streets: Closed Saturday, September 4 at 6:00 am; Re-Opens Tuesday, September 7 at 3:00pm
- King and Parliament streets: Closed September 13 to 23.
- Shuter, St. David, Cole, and Oak streets at Parliament street: Each closed for a 72 hour period during weekdays, schedule to be determined.
- King and Berkeley streets: Closed for 96 hour period during weekdays, schedule to be determined.
Parking Restrictions
In order to safely complete the work as quickly as possible and return the area to normal conditions, this project will cause some inconveniences. During heavy construction, restrictions will be imposed to turning, parking and driving lanes in and around the work area. No parking will be permitted in the active work zones.
Continued Pedestrian Access
Pedestrian access to business and walkways will be maintained on both sides of all roads at all times during construction.
Deliveries
During construction, deliveries to the front of businesses within the work zone may need to be coordinated with the on-site City inspector. See project contacts below.
Recycling and Garbage Collection
Follow your normal routine. If required, the contractor will move the items to an appropriate location and return the bins/containers. Please label your bins/containers with your address.
TTC Transit Service Route Changes
The following diversionary routings are to be implemented with the commencement of service (5:00am) on the morning of July 26th, remaining in effect until further notice. This phase of the project affects Parliament Street between the Shuter Street and Queen Street intersections.
65 Parliament Buses
(The below routings to be in effect until the morning of July 30th)
- Southbound: From Gerrard Street; south on Parliament Street, west on Shuter Street, south on Sherbourne Street, east on Adelaide Street, south on Parliament Street to route.
- Northbound: Regular routing
The following diversionary routings below are to be implemented with the commencement of service (5:00am) on the morning of July 30th, remaining in effect until approximately August 16th. This phase of the project affects Queen Street from Parliament Street to Power Street, including the Queen Street East at Parliament Street intersection.
65 Parliament Buses
- Northbound: From King Street; north on Parliament Street, west on Richmond Street, Queen Street, north on Sherbourne Street, east on Shuter Street, north
on Parliament Street to route.
- Southbound: From Gerrard Street; south on Parliament Street, west on Shuter Street, south on Sherbourne Street, east on Adelaide Street, south on
Parliament Street to route.
501-301 Queen Streetcars
- Eastbound: From Yonge Street; east on Queen Street, south on Church Street, east on King Street, east on Queen Street to route.
- Westbound: From Broadview Avenue; west on Queen Street, west on King Street, north on Church Street, west on Richmond Street, north on Victoria Street, west on Queen Street to route.
502 Downtowner Replacement Buses
- Eastbound: From Yonge Street; east on Queen Street, south on Sherbourne Street, east on King Street, east on Queen Street to route.
- Westbound: From Broadview Avenue; west on Queen Street, south on Power Street, west on Richmond Street, north on Sherbourne Street, west on Queen
Street to route.
The following diversionary routings listed below are to be implemented at 9:30am on the morning of August 20th, remaining in effect until 6:00am on August 23rd. This phase of the project affects the Parliament Street at Richmond Street East intersection.
143 Beach/Downtown Express Buses
- Eastbound: Regular routing.
- Westbound: From Broadview Avenue; west on Eastern Avenue, west on Front Street, north on Sherbourne Street, west on Richmond Street to route.
65 Parliament Buses
- Northbound: From Front St. north on Parliament Street, west on King Street, north on Sherbourne Street, east on Shuter Street, north on Parliament Street to
route.
- Southbound: From Gerrard Street; south on Parliament Street, west on Shuter Street, south on Sherbourne Street, east on Adelaide Street, south on Parliament Street to route.
Work Hours
Streetcar track reconstruction involves periods of 24-hour operation. Generally, all heavy construction work will take place between the hours of 7:00am to 7:00pm Monday to Friday with weekend work as required, but may be extended to 11:00pm during track work at major intersections. Overnight operation involves TTC rail installation work consisting of delivery of rail, rail installation and rail welding/grinding. This work is required to support the daytime construction and complete the project as quickly as possible. While every effort will be made to minimize construction noise during the work periods, noise should be expected.
