The Project
In order to clean our air and protect our environment, Toronto needs to create a forward-thinking sustainable energy strategy built on energy conservation, greenhouse gas reduction and early adoption of renewable energy sources. Residents are invited to help create this environmental framework by providing input into the City’s sustainable energy strategy, The Power to Live Green.

The Background
Toronto is at an energy crossroads. Since the late eighteenth Century, Toronto has used fossil fuels – coal, oil and natural gas - to drive both economic and personal growth, from powering cars and industry, to generating electricity and heating and cooling our homes. This dependence has resulted in historic levels of climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions and smog-causing pollution.

In 2007, Toronto City Council unanimously adopted the Climate Change, Clean Air and Sustainable Energy Action Plan, Phase I of the City’s framework to build a more environmentally sustainable Toronto.

This plan contains 68 aggressive, core actions aimed at reducing Toronto’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. This leading environmental framework was created with input from hundreds of invested residents, environmental leaders and members of the business community.

City Council has moved aggressively on implementing this plan and, in two short years, has already implemented almost one-half of the recommendations. The others are well underway.

In order to continue on our path of environmental stewardship, residents are invited to provide their thoughts on what we can do, both personally and as a City, to help build a more sustainable energy future for Toronto. The Power to Live Green will be Phase II of the City’s environmentally plan.

Your Comments are Welcome
Consultation with members of the public is vital to creating an environmental framework that all Torontonians can embrace. Paula Fletcher, Chair of the Parks and Environment Committee, will provide participants with an update on the City’s current issues and challenges, and will invite residents to share their thoughts on what we can do, together, to build a more sustainable energy future.
