Notice of completion - Class Environmental Assessment - Storm Water Management System for the Snow Storage and Snow Melting Facility - 207 New Toronto Street

In the winter of 2009, the City of Toronto received approval from the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) to op-erate an interim snow storage and snow melting facility on municipal property located at 207 New Toronto Street, subject to the City undertaking a number of remedial measures to mitigate potential environmental con-cerns associated with the operation, particularly the control of snow melt and stormClick on image for larger version - Notice of completion - Class Environmental Assessment - Storm Water Management System for the Snow Storage and Snow Melting Facility - 207 New Toronto Street water. Pursuant to Municipal Class Environmental Assessment requirements, the City of Toronto has undertaken a Schedule A+ Environmental Assessment to plan and design a storm water management system for this facility. The design resulting from this assessment upgrades the existing site to reduce snow melt infiltration into the groundwater and to manage the quantity and quality of surface water runoff during storm events without spill-over to adjacent properties.

The evaluation and design process found that a dual storm water management system is necessary: an on-site oil and grit separator dedicated to treating snow melt runoff; and, a storm water management pond to contain and treat natural snow melt and surface water drainage entirely on the property.

The design of on-site storm water management is based on proven technologies well-suited to this location. Design capacities account for both the amount of rain water and natural snow melt expected during spring storm events. The City of Toronto will proceed with the construction of these facilities in June 2010.

The storm water management report is available for public review at the following location:
