October 21, 1999

To: Scarborough Community Council

From: Joe Halstead, Commissioner Economic Development, Culture and Tourism

Subject: The Naming of the Softball Diamonds at East Point Park as:

"The Ken Morrish Softball Complex"

Highland Creek

Purpose:

To respond to a Notice of Motion by Councillor Moeser, seconded by councillor Duguid, approved by Council June 9, 10, 11, 1999, that the softball complex at East Point Park be renamed the Ken Morrish Baseball Complex.

Financial Implications and Impact Statement:

There are no financial implications from the adoption of this report.

Recommendations:

It is recommended that:

(1) the softball diamonds in East Point Park be re-named "The Ken Morrish Softball Complex"; and

(2) the appropriate City Officials be authorized and directed to take the necessary action to give effect thereto.

Comments:

Mr. Ken Morrish was first elected to Scarborough Council in 1967, as an Alderman. Since 1969 he has held elected positions of Senior Controller, Deputy Mayor of Scarborough, Mayor of Scarborough, Metro Councillor and Deputy Metro Chairman. Mr. Morrish not only represented his constituents in Highland Creek but held positions on the Board of Directors of the Canadian National Exhibition, Metropolitan Toronto Convention and Visitors Association, and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Morrish was very instrumental in the development of East Point Park when the park was under the jurisdiction of the former Metro Toronto.

The following East District Community Associations have been contacted and support the naming of the softball complex at East Point Park as "The Ken Morrish Softball Complex":

(1) West Rouge Sport and Recreation;

(2) Highland Creek Community Association;

(3) Centennial Community Recreation Association;

(4) West Rouge Community Association; and

(5) Port Union Community Association.

Mr. Morrish is aware of this and is very honoured to be considered.

Conclusions:

In accordance with the revision to the Parkland Naming Policy, Council consider naming the softball complex at East Point Park, "The Ken Morrish Softball Complex".
