Defeating litter
Family walking on boardwalk

The City of Toronto invites residents to play a role in defeating litter.

Next time you see a "litter hot spot" (e.g. an overflowing bin or basket, or an unusually dirty street or sidewalk) let us know. Contact 311 to report it.

This will alert City of Toronto staff to send a clean-up crew to address the problem.

What's new

Thanks for the tidy up Torontonians!
Once again, in 2009, both the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover and Mayor David Miller’s Community Clean-up Day were very successful thanks to the many volunteer participants. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of our shared public spaces. The results speak for themselves.

Results from 2009 spring operational clean-up
The City's annual three-week spring clean-up conducted by various operating divisions removes garbage and litter remaining after the winter season. Here are just a few of the statistics from this 2009 operational clean-up: crews removed some 5,504 tonnes of litter, 2,905 sq. meters of graffiti and 2,836 illegally displayed posters.

Listen up, littering cigarette butts is wrong, never mind ugly!
Just as keeping Toronto clean and beautiful is up to all of us, litter is everybody's problem too. It's up to all of us not to litter. Putting garbage in its place sets the foundation for a clean and beautiful city. Cigarette butts make up a large part of Toronto's litter and they can take up to 12 years to break down. Then, do the right thing because litter is wrong everywhere.

Results of Toronto's 2006 litter audit
At a media conference on September 6th, Mayor David Miller announced the results of the 2006 Litter Audit. In 2002, the City of Toronto established a litter reduction goal of 50% for the period of 2002 to 2007 and mandated litter audits be done on an annual basis. This year we’ve reduced litter by 40% since 2002. Progress can be attributed to collection and enforcement enhancements that were put in place over the past several years. Less litter contributes to a clean city, the foundation for neighbourhood beautification. More details, including information on the measurement of branded litter, are provided in the full, final report The City of Toronto Streets Litter Audit 2006 (PDF).
