Community involvement is a high school requirement. Volunteering with Toronto Long-Term Care Homes and Services is a rewarding way to earn your community service hours. Your time and talents will have a far-reaching effect on the community.

Volunteering with us offers you lots of opportunities – to build new friendships that you never knew were possible, to get a first-hand look at working in long-term care, to learn about leadership from people who have been leaders throughout their lives, and to walk into a room and make someone smile.

If you’re interested in working with seniors as a career choice, you can join nurses, medical staff, social workers, recreation staff, music therapists, complementary care specialists, and occupational and physiotherapists at work.

Youth Council

Half of our homes have active Volunteer Youth Councils, with more on the way, that provide a framework for youth volunteers to gain leadership experience, learn decision-making skills and augment successful resident programs.Youth are an important part of the volunteer team within Toronto Long-Term Care Homes and Services. At present, one in four of our active volunteers are under the age of 18 years.

Youth are involved in resident movie programs, memory art projects, Wii™ tournaments, musical theatre and special events. We have lots of options for volunteer service - you can help out with music, crafts, gardening or special events. You can help staff on outings, or you might prefer one-to-one activities like writing letters, helping a resident send e-mails, reading to residents, or simply having a pleasant conversation. Every volunteer has their own unique way to contribute to the quality of life of residents in Toronto Long-Term Care Homes and Services.

Youth Summit

In February each year, a Youth Summit is held at Metro Hall. Input received from those in attendance assists and directs divisional work underway and complements the Mayor's initiatives to expand opportunities for Toronto's youth.

Student Volunteers
Student volunteers from across Toronto gathered at City Hall on February 18 for the 4th annual Volunteer Youth Summit. The Volunteer Youth Summit gives youth that volunteer within the homes the opportunity to come together to share ideas and network. Community involvement is a high school requirement and in an effort to enhance participation by student volunteers, each site has set up a Youth Council who are actively involved in resident activities and fund-raising.

Time Commitment

As a volunteer, we ask you to make a six-month commitment to the program — but you are welcome to volunteer for as long as you like after that, especially if you have developed special friendships with our residents. Our coordinators are ready to meet with you and help you find a volunteer program that is right for you. We hope you can join us to share your talents, so that we can help you build new skills and strengthen the community.
