The Canada Malting complex was built by the Canada Malting Company in 1928 to supply the growing Ontario barley market. At the time of their construction, they were considered a new innovation. The facility was closed by the Canada Malting Company in 1987 and has since remained vacant and deteriorated, requiring additional funding for stabilization. The Canada Malting complex was listed in the City's Inventory of Heritage Buildings in 1973 due to its architectural and contextual significance. The 1929 and 1944 silos were designated by the City of Toronto under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act on February 1, 2010.
