Clean City Beautiful City |

A clean and beautiful city reflects the pride and engagement of the people who live there. This is a two way street - urban beauty fosters civic pride, and civic pride helps residents stay engaged and look after their city. In support of this principle City Council recently unanimously approved the Clean City Beautiful City initiative.
Clean City Beautiful City is both a grand vision of how we can make our streets, buildings, and public spaces more spectacular, and an exercise in minutiae, ensuring our street signs, newspaper boxes, park benches and other street furniture give our city a unique, pleasing character. It's also about keeping our streets clean, tending our public gardens and green space, and increasing our tree canopy.
The Mayor's office welcomes its role as a leader in the Clean and Beautiful City initiative. We have already hired additional litter pickers, employed new by-law enforcement officers to help prevent illegal dumping, created a dedicated Clean City Beautiful City Roundtable. We need the support, though, of all residents of Toronto. Given the feedback at the recent Listening to Toronto session, I feel confident that Torontonians are ready to do what it takes to make their city shine.
Torontonians are already doing their part. One of the first Clean City Beautiful City events was the 20-Minute Toronto Makeover and Community Clean-up Day in April. More than 40,000 residents answered our call to spend some time picking up litter with their neighbours.
A few weeks later, the fifth annual Doors Open Toronto saw more than 160,000 people come out to enjoy this city's famous and not-so-famous architectural landmarks. Torontonians' passion for urban architecture has also led to unprecedented interest in the architectural renaissance that is transforming landmarks like the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario College of Art and Design, and the new Ballet/Opera House.
To ensure the design of public and private spaces meet the highest standards, the City will raise the bar on urban design and architecture. This phase of the Clean and Beautiful City Initiative will involve forging partnerships within City services and with private citizens, organizations and industries to ensure Toronto achieves its beautiful city goals.
Working together, City Councillors, the private sector, community groups, and the people of Toronto can make this a city of visual splendour that in which we can all take pride.
