Mayor's Community Safety Awards
The Mayor's Community Safety Awards recognizes groups, individuals, organizations and businesses who promote safety and violence prevention in their community. Do you know someone who is deserving of this award? Nominations are being received until March 31, 2003.

Mayor campaigns for city-friendly government
During a Board of Trade luncheon on October 3, 2002, Mayor Lastman addressed the need for people to put party politics aside and vote only for a government that will provide funds for public transit and social housing with no strings attached. For more information, view the Mayor's speech to the Board.

Toronto City Summit
Mayor Lastman launched the Toronto City Summit in June 2002, to strike a new deal with higher levels of government and shape an agenda to move Toronto forward over the next 5 to 10 years. Leaders from all sectors of Toronto's diverse community came together to assess the city's strengths, identify its key challenges, and shape an agenda for its future. For more information, view the Mayor's Summit closing speech.

Toronto's Emergency Plan
In October 2001, Mayor Lastman presented a report to Toronto City Council regarding the state of the City's Emergency Plan. As a result of recent events a review was undertaken by the City's emergency services to report on emergency response capabilities in Toronto. For more information, view the text of Mayor Lastman's speech to City Council.

The T.O. Toss Campaign
Toronto has a reputation for being one of the cleanest cities in the world. There was a time when we lived up to that reputation - but the vigilance Torontonians used to show in keeping their city clean has waned.

The T.O. Toss is a campaign initiated by Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman to change that. Litter hurts everyone; it makes our city less attractive for residents, tourists and business investors alike. Mayor Mel says, "C'mon, Toronto: Do the T.O. Toss and keep our City clean!"

Mayor Lastman unveils a new deal for Toronto taxpayers
"Our Toronto faces a serious threat in substantial tax increases with budget pressures for 2001 currently at $305 million," said Mayor Lastman. "My job is protect our city - we can't afford to lose the essential services that provide our outstanding quality of life and we cannot afford a huge tax increase that will drive people out of their homes or prevent them from ever becoming homeowners in the first place."

Mayor's Task Force on Young Offenders
On May 12, 1998 Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Anne MacLellan, announced proposed changes to the Young Offenders Act. In response to the minister's request to have Canadians discuss and debate the proposed amendments, Mayor Mel Lastman has established the Mayor's Task Force on Young Offenders to consult Toronto residents.

Setting the stage for youth employment
Count Me In logoRecognizing that youth unemployment is a serious issue in the City of Toronto, Mayor Mel Lastman brought the provincial and federal governments together to help the city implement an innovative youth employment project.

If you are a youth looking for job placement, or you are an employer who wants to hire a youth, call the Job Connect Hotline at 326-5656 or 1-800-326-5656. Find out more about Mayor Mel's Youth Employment Initiative.

Homelessness Action Task Force report cover - click for more informationMayor's Homelessness Action Task Force
The primary objective of the Task Force was to develop solutions to the growing crisis of homelessness in Toronto. The Task Force provided general policy directions and specific strategies to meet the needs of all homeless people: visibly homeless people on the streets or in hostels, hidden homeless people living in illegal or temporary accommodation, and those at risk of becoming homeless. In proposing solutions, the Task Force recognized the diversity of people who are homeless and develop strategies that will address their different situations and needs. It is intended that the recommendations of the Task Force will enable the new City of Toronto to adopt a comprehensive policy on homelessness.
