Statement by Mayor Mel Lastman - September 11, 2001

On behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of Toronto I want to extend my thoughts and prayers to all the victims and their families who have been harmed by these unspeakable terrorist attacks in the United States.

Like all of you, I am in shock and outraged by these vicious attacks.

We will do everything possible to assist the people of the United States to cope with this emergency. All of our emergency services are ready to help.

I have spoken with all of our department heads and emergency services coordinators. We are ready to provide whatever resources are needed to assist the victims of these terrible tragedies.

I have also spoken with the Prime Minister's Office. Canadian Airports have been closed. Federal officials feel there is no threat to the people of Toronto or to Canada.

I have also spoken with the Office of the Premier of Ontario and have received the same assurances.

The Emergency Operations Centre will be operational as of 1:00 p.m. today and is ready to coordinate all staff and resources to assist the United States if requested.

There is no threat to the people of Toronto. Be assured that the City of Toronto has an Emergency Response Plan to mobilize its own resources if required.

We are in constant contact with both the Federal and Provincial Governments.
