Toronto’s Outdoor Art Moose-eum

Moose in the City presented by Labatt Blue was a wildly successful outdoor art exhibition of 326 life-sized moose sculptures grazing the streets of Toronto from April to October 2000.

The exhibition also generated a number of spectacular spin-off events including a sensational Moose Jam in Yorkville, the world’s first-ever Running of the Moose down Bay Street, Mayor Mel’s Moose Cup at Woodbine Racetrack and a festive display of moose decked out for the holiday season as part of Cavalcade of Light in Nathan Phillips Square.

Local residents and millions of visitors from around the world fell in love with Toronto’s metropolitan moose. Their fame rapidly spread far and wide with a delegation of moose ‘diplomats’ traveling the world from Chicago’s Navy Pier to the Olympic Games in Sydney and hundreds of moose stories running nationally and internationally from Vancouver to St. John’s and London to Tokyo.

In a spectacular finale to this phenomenal exhibition, 172 of the original sculptures from the Moose in the City exhibition will be auctioned for charity from January 15 to 30, 2001 as part of The Great Moose Auction. Over 75 local Toronto charities will benefit from this fantastic fundraising initiative.

    Moose in the City

With the click of a mouse, you can buy a moose!

141 magnificent moose sculptures from Toronto’s phenomenal Moose in the City exhibition will be on sale at buyamoose.com from January 15 to 30, 2001 as part of The Great Moose Auction presented by Labatt Blue. Best news yet… every cent from the sale of these wonderful, whimsical creations will go to charity.

The Moose in the City exhibition generated a number of spectacular spin-off events including the sensational Moose Jam in Yorkville, the world’s first-ever Running of the Moose down Bay Street and the zany Mayor Mel’s Moose Cup at Woodbine Racetrack. The Great Moose Auction, however, promises to be the most unforgettable ‘moose’ event to date, with 75 local Toronto charities in line to reap the financial benefits from this fantastic fundraising initiative.

One-third of all proceeds generated from The Great Moose Auction have been designated to benefit Toronto Olympic athletes through the Canadian Olympic Athlete Association Grant Program. The remaining two-thirds will go to the charities of the moose patron’s choice.

Millions of people from across Canada and around the world fell in love with Toronto’s metropolitan moose during the summer of 2000, when 326 of these majestic works of art filled the city’s streets. Their fame continued to spread as a contingent of moose ‘diplomats’ traveled the world from Chicago’s Navy Pier to the Olympic Games in Sydney and hundreds of moose stories ran nationally and internationally from Vancouver to St. John’s and London to Tokyo. The online auction at buyamoose.com offers a perfect opportunity for these world-wide moose-admirers to now purchase a moose of their own!

This overwhelming affection for the moose has been amply demonstrated by the generous final bids a number of moose sculptures have garnered at various local fundraising events to date. The Moose in the City exhibition has already raised a total of $350,000 for charity, with final bids for individual moose as high as $27,000. All indicators point to some healthy bidding wars over the next few weeks!

    How to bid

To bid on a moose, individuals must go to www.buyamoose.com. The web site goes live on January 15 at 1:30 p.m. Potential bidders must first register, with no obligation to buy. The moose are listed in alphabetical order by name. All listings include a full-colour photograph, a brief written description of the moose sculpture and the charity that will benefit from its sale. Individuals can place as many bids as desired until the sale closes on Tuesday, January 30. Bidders will be advised by e-mail if they have been outbid. Individuals will be notified by email if they are the successful bidder.

In addition to the 141 moose for sale online at buyamoose.com, 31 moose sculptures will be auctioned live at The Marilyn Lastman Arts Ball on January 29th.

For more information on both the online and live components of The Great Moose Auction call the City of Toronto’s Great Moose Auction Hotline at (416) 338-2576.

Moose to be auctioned live at The Marilyn Lastman Arts Ball

31 magnificent moose sculptures from Toronto’s phenomenal Moose in the City exhibition will go on the auction block at the Marilyn Lastman Arts Ball, January 29, 2001 as part of The Great Moose Auction presented by Labatt Blue. Every cent from the sale of these wonderful, whimsical creations will go to charity.

Sothebys has been retained to conduct the January 29th sale. This world-renowned auction house handled the sale of Chicago’s Cows on Parade with great success and anticipates extremely positive results from the live component of The Great Moose Auction.

Local residents and millions of visitors from around the world fell in love with Toronto’s moose during the summer of 2000, when 326 of these beautiful works of art filled the streets of Canada’s largest metropolis. This wide-spread affection for the moose has been amply demonstrated by the generous final bids a number of moose sculptures garnered at various fundraising events to date. The Moose in the City exhibition has already raised a total of $350,000 for charity, with final bids for individual moose as high as $27,000. All indictors point to some healthy bidding wars to come!

The Marilyn Lastman Arts Ball takes place on January 29 at 6 p.m. at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, 255 Front Street West. Limited tickets are still available. Those interested in attending should call Karen Miller at 416-224-9990. The moose auction will take place between 9 and 10 p.m.

In addition to the 31 moose being auctioned live at the Marilyn Lastman Arts Ball, another 141 moose go on sale, online, at www.buyamoose.com on January 15, 2001. For more information on both the online and live components of The Great Moose Auction call the City of Toronto’s Moose Auction Hotline at 416-338-2576.

    'Moose Jam' on City Streets!

    See the Moose Jam! ceremonies
    You'll need the free RealPlayer.

June 5, 2000 - Toronto - A massive moose invasion blocked the intersection of Cumberland and Bellair June 5, 2000 as herds of the majestic creatures descended upon Toronto to participate in an extraordinary outdoor art event!

Amid low flying choppers, wailing sirens, honking car horns, and bellowing moose calls Mayor Mel Lastman and George Cohon, Chairman of Moose in the City, arrived in Toronto's trendy Yorkville district by police escort in response to an emergency call from the Chief of Police.

"It's a Moose Jam!" exclaimed the Mayor as he looked down from his perch on a firetruck that had arrived minutes prior to help deal with the confusion.

“They've obviously heard about Yorkville's reputation for great shopping and dining!" remarked Chairman Cohon as he surveyed the herds.

Hundreds of Torontonians, including Moose patrons and artists, packed the streets to cheer on the spectacular moose gathering -- an extraordinary kick-off Toronto’s summer long outdoor art exhibition of life-size moose sculptures decorated by local artists.

“Moose in the City will show the world what wonderful artists this city has; it's sure to be a great summer-time attraction for both residents and tourists. What cows did for Chicago, moose will do for Toronto -- and then some!" declared Mayor Mel Lastman at the official media launch for the event in March.

"Let the celebrations begin!" declared George Cohon as Nancy White, one of Canada's best comic songwriters, climbed on top of a moose to perform a special tribute song to Moose in the City. Toronto's Samba Squad got the party into full swing as they moved through the crowds performing their rhythms. Hundreds of corporations, organizations and individuals have become part of Moose in the City presented by Labatt by sponsoring their own moose. By July, 325 moose sculptures will have arrived at their summer grazing spots throughout the city.

At the end of moose season, patrons will be invited to donate their sculptures to a moose auction, with the net proceeds going to the Olympic Team and local Toronto charities.

    Haaaaaaaave a great day
