Prevention and Intervention Toronto (P.I.T.) is an evidence-based pilot project that launched in December 2009 to help reduce gang activity in three of Toronto's Priority Neighbourhoods for Investment. Those neighbourhoods are Jane and Finch, Jamestown (Rexdale) and Weston-Mount Dennis. The pilot program works with local residents between the ages of 13 and 24 who are involved in a gang or at risk of joining/associating with one.
This three-year $5 million dollar (approximately) pilot project is funded by the National Crime Prevention Centre through the Youth Gang Prevention Fund. The City of Toronto manages the pilot, while JVS Toronto delivers the services and the University of Toronto 's Centre of Criminology evaluates the progress and outcomes.
How does it work?
Three consecutive groups of 100 selected youth will commit to actively participate in the 36 week gang prevention and intervention program. Using a wraparound case management approach, each participant is assigned a dedicated JVS Case Manager. The Case Manager works one on one with the participant to assess their individual needs (including emotional, social and educational), relocation issues and employability concerns to develop a customized plan using proven, research-based models. The plan also includes intensive group training sessions, community building activities and a support for their families.
