  Mayor's Invitation to Competitors

Mayor Miller

October 3, 2006

Greetings from the City of Toronto!

Today, as Toronto celebrates its Year of Creativity, I am pleased to invite the international design community to submit bold and creative proposals to revitalize City Hall's Nathan Phillips Square in a manner that respects the spirit of the 1957 competition and the beauty of Finnish Architect Viljo Revell's original design.

Nearly 50 years ago, Mayor Nathan Phillips invited international architects to submit ideas for a new city hall and public square for the City of Toronto that would be "a most important element in the life of the city, a symbol of Toronto, a source of pride and pleasure to its citizens, to be used and enjoyed by them."

A bold, modern and world-renowned design by Viljo Revell won the international competition. Toronto's new City Hall officially opened on September 13th, 1965. Nathan Phillips Square, located in front of City Hall, was named in honour of the Mayor who championed the original design competition.

Nathan Phillips Square hosts a variety of community and special events that are attended by over 1.5 million people each year. Thousands of out-of-town visitors visit the Square annually along with many Torontonians who pause for lunch, relax by the reflecting pool in summer or skate on the ice rink in winter.

A revitalized Square will be celebrated proudly for years, along with other new and rejuvenated City landmarks such as the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Gallery of Ontario.

Nathan Phillips Square will continue to instill in us an idea of what our city can become, and be a source of inspiration for all Torontonians.

Yours truly,
Mayor David Miller
