About the Ontario Summer Games
The Ontario Summer Games began in 1970 as a showcase for amateur sport. They are Ontario's largest multi-sport event, including team and individual sports. The Ontario Summer Games are a program of the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and are delivered by Sport Alliance Ontario, in collaboration with host communities.

The 2012 Ontario Summer Games were awarded by Sport Alliance Ontario through a formal bidding process to the City of Toronto on August 6, 2010. The official announcement of the host city was made at the 2010 Ontario Summer Games Opening Ceremony.

The City of Toronto will host the 2012 Ontario Summer Games from August 16 to 19, 2012, with pre-opening events on August 14 and 15. (Golf starts at the Cedarbrae Golf Club on August 14 and the canoe/kayak sprint competition takes place on August 16 at the Welland International Flatwater Centre.)

The 2012 Ontario Summer Games will feature 2,500 athletes competing in 28 sports in multiple venues across Toronto and surrounding regions, as well as 368 coaches, 113 managers, 281 officials, 21 provincial sport organization representatives, more than 1,000 volunteers and thousands of spectators.

The age range of athletes competing in the Games is from 11 to 22 years. Each sport designates which age group will compete based on their athlete development model.

The overall budget of the 2012 Ontario Summer Games is $1.5 million and will be funded through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport through Sport Alliance Ontario (40%); sponsorship and fundraising (40%); and registration, ticket sales and City of Toronto staffing, facilities and in-kind support (20%).

The Games Organizing Committee (GOC) includes the City's Manager of Multi-Sport Games, who works with the GOC Chair and members, as well as volunteers in key activity areas.

About 1,000 volunteers are needed to assist the City of Toronto in hosting the 2012 Ontario Summer Games. Volunteer registration is now taking place online at www.ontariosummergames.ca.
The 2012 Ontario Summer Games will provide volunteer opportunities in: athletes' villages, family and friends program, food services, special events, sport venues, media/promotions, photography, registration/accreditation, transportation services, medical, greening the games, results/statistics, admission/ticket sales and set up.
