| The Toronto
Music Garden - the only park of its kind in the world - officially
opened to the public on June 10, 1999 with a rousing celebration marked
by singing, music, dancing and a cello performance. |
 |
Mayor Mel
Lastman joined world-acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Jim Fleck, chair of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and designer Julie Moir Messervy to welcome the public to a park designed to reflect Ma's interpretation
of Bach's First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello.
|
"This is a wonderful
day for our City," said Lastman. "This park is unique and a great
new addition to our parks system. It is a place of music, a place
of tranquility and a place to enjoy our waterfront. It will draw visitors
from around the world."
|
| To match the
park's uniqueness, a one-of-a-kind opening featured an arrival by
water by the official party and a water display from the city's fireboat,
the William Lyon Mackenzie. In addition, Ma played each of Bach's
movement in the six unique sections of the garden. The park is a product
of public-private partnership. Fleck and his wife, Margaret, raised
more than $1.5 million and the city supplied the land and the infrastructure.
