Eglinton Flats
is Toronto's largest regional sports field facility. Built on Humber
River floodplain, the complex occupies three quadrants at the Jane
Street and Eglinton Avenue West intersection. Scarlett Woods Golf
Course, also operated by Toronto Parks & Recreation, occupies the
fourth quadrant at the south-west corner. In 1972, the former Metropolitan
Toronto Council adopted a development program for South Humber Regional
Park including Eglinton Flats. The facility opened in 1977. Six
of the twelve pay-as-you-play tennis courts became available for
year-round use after an inflatable fabric bubble was installed in
1989.
The complex
takes its name from the area's characteristic landscape and Eglinton
Avenue West. Interestingly, this road has an association with sports
and contests since it was named after Archibald, the 13th Earl of
Eglinton, who held a mock medieval tournament at his castle in France
during August 1839. The land at Eglinton Flats was owned by the
Scarlett family during the mid-1800's and later used extensively
for market gardens until Hurricane Hazel devastated the area in
1954. The Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority
acquired the land from the then Borough of York and many private
owners before transferring it to the Park & Culture Department for
maintenance and operation.
