The Capital Projects Section of Parks, Forestry & Recreation is leading a revitalization initiative for the playground area located in the eastern portion of Oriole Park. The goal is to provide exemplary play opportunities for children of all abilities in a manner that fits within the scale of this neighbourhood park.

Neshama Playground at Oriole Park - Update

The City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation department is well underway building the new playground at Oriole Park. The weather has impacted the construction schedule, and it is anticipated that some elements of the work will have to be completed in the spring of 2011. However, the pathway connecting Chaplin Crescent to Frobisher Drive has been re-opened for use during the winter.

Work that has already been done:

  • Tree protection installed to maintain the health of existing trees
  • Old play equipment removed and salvaged by Parks staff
  • Existing underground utility services located
  • Old washroom building removed
  • New underground services installed including new water lines and new drainage pipes
  • New foundations for new washroom building built
  • Excavation of material and building up of base for new play areas
  • Installation of underground services for water play
  • Ongoing installation of new washroom building
  • Concrete paving and walls
  • Installation new play equipment

Work to take place over the Winter:

  • Ongoing construction of new washroom building

Work to take place in spring 2011:

  • Install new play area surfacing
  • Install junior water play
  • Asphalt paving
  • Install new furniture
  • Finish grading
  • Planting and sod
  • Clean-up

The new construction will include:

  • A new washroom building
  • Senior age children and junior age children play areas, including swings
  • Sand play
  • Junior age children splash play area
  • Open space play areas
  • New park lighting in the playground area, including the ‘commuter’
  • path between Frobisher and Chaplin
  • New plantings
  • Many other simple amenities such as park benches and picnic tables, to improve the condition of the park, but maintain its charm and character
