Our system of lessons allows beginners at any age to start learning from scratch. It also introduces basic hockey or figure skating skills to beginners skaters.
Parent/Guardian & Tot Skate
- One adult must accompany each child enrolled.
- Adult must have a competent skating ability and be present on the ice to assist their child for the entire class.
- Learning is focussed through the parent/guardian to ensure comfort, communication and extra safety.
- All participants (including parent/guardian) must wear skates while on the ice.
- Parent/Guardian may be required to wear a CSA approved hockey helmet based on skating ability and the instructor’s discretion.
- Class includes basic skating skills with a warm up, group lesson and games.
Learn to Skate: Preschooler
- Previous participation in a Parent/Guardian and Tot Skating Lesson is recommended.
- Child must be capable of going on the ice alone.
- Child should be able to stand and walk on skates with straight ankles off the ice.
- At the first class, the instructor will do an assessment of your child’s skating ability. Your child may be placed in a more appropriate level, if required.
- Parents are not permitted on the ice.
- Class includes basic skating skills with a warm up, group lesson and games.
Preschooler: Level 1
- Prerequisite: Caregiver & Tot or must be capable of going on the ice alone.
- Balance and posture, march and turn, touch toes, skating using alternating feet, gliding, introduction to stopping and backwards stepping.
Preschooler: Level 2
- Prerequisite: Preschool Level 1
- Skating using alternating feet, hopping on two feet, T/V/L push offs, gliding and stopping, forward double sculling, backwards skating and stopping.
Preschooler: Level 3
- Prerequisite: Preschool Level 2
- Gliding on one foot, inside and outside edges, backwards
skating, walking cross steps, forward circle thrusts, cross
cuts, turning forwards to backwards and one foot stops.
Toronto Learn to Skate: Levels 1-5
Toronto's Learn to Skate programs are aimed towards ages 6-12 years. Classes include a group warm up,
instructional lesson and individual free skate time. Participants complete one level before moving on to the next level.
Learn to Skate: Level 1
- Development of balance and posture
- Introduction to forward skating, gliding, stopping and backward skating
- Level 1 is for participants who are new to skating and are unable to skate the width of the ice surface with a glide. Participants should be able to stand and walk on skates with straight ankles off the ice.
Learn to Skate: Level 2
- Development of forward gliding, stopping, backward skating
- Introduction to one foot glides and backward gliding
- Successful completion of Level 1 and the participant can skate (with a glide) the length of the ice without falling.
Learn to Skate: Level 3
- Development of backward stopping, backward gliding and edges
- Introduction to cross-overs, slalom skating, 2 foot turns
- Successful completion of Level 2 and the participant is able to glide on one foot, skate backwards and stop.
Learn to Skate: Level 4
- Development of cross-overs, backward stopping
- Introduction to one foot turns, backward circle thrusts
- Successful completion of Level 3 and the participant has strong backwards skating and stopping ability.
Learn to Skate: Level 5
- Development of backward cross-overs, forward edges, skill combinations
- Introduction to parallel stopping, backward edges and turns
- Successful completion of Level 4 and the proficient skating ability. Participant is able to perform forward cross-overs, forward inside edges, 3-turns.
Learn to Skate – Youth (13-18 yrs)
For beginner/intermediate skaters. Emphasis is placed
on basic skills, forward and backward skating, turns, stopping, edges and cross cuts.
Learn to Skate Youth: Beginner
- Class includes; basic skating skills, forward skating, stopping, gliding and balance.
Learn to Skate Youth: Advanced
- Class includes; forward and backward skating, turns, advanced stopping skills, edges and cross cuts.
Learn to Skate: Adults (19-59 yrs)
This is not an advanced skating program, these courses are introductory/beginner level for adults.
The instructor will determine skill levels, and skaters will be divided into groups according to their ability.
The emphasis is placed on basic skills and on building ice confidence for new skaters.
Learn to Skate Adult: Beginner
- Class includes; basic skating skills, starting, stopping, gliding turning and balance.
Learn to Skate Adult: Advanced
- Class includes; forward and backward skating, turns,
advanced stopping skills, edges and cross cuts.
Figure Skating: Levels 1-2 (8-15 yrs)
At the first class, the instructor will do an assessment of your child’s skating ability. Your child may be placed in a
more appropriate level, if required. Participants are introduced to the various elements of figure skating including spins, jumps, footwork, dance
and music choreography. Prerequisite: Completion of Learn to Skate: Level 4 or equivalent skating experience
Level 1
- Forward and backward stroking, forward and backward crosscuts in a figure eight, forward inside three turns,
forward spirals, bunny hops, swing rolls, two foot spin.
Level 2
- Forward Russian stroking, one-foot side stops, chasses,
inside spread-eagle, waltz jump forward three jumps, one-foot spin, forward drags, backward spirals, footwork sequence.
Ice Dancing (13 yrs+)
- This program is designed to provide participants with an
opportunity to learn, practise and enjoy skating formal
pattern dances in solo or with a partner (skaters must
have their own partners).
- Program open to skaters who demonstrate competence at
Level 4. Skaters must be able to execute proper turns and
edges, and skate backwards skillfully.
- Dance music is played during the program.
- Group lessons will be provided for beginner dancers.
- Dancers from all levels are welcome, and instructors may
provide pointers to skaters practising dances at the higher
dance levels (above the preliminary dances).
- Partnering is instructed in stationary format: pressure
points, positioning, hold, relationship to partner.
Note for Power Skating and Hockey Schools:
- Participants are assumed to have achieved a competent level of skating and hockey experience.
- A CSA approved helmet with full facial protection and neck guard is mandatory.
- Full equipment is highly recommended.
- Please provide your own stick
Hockey Skills Programs

Preschool Hockey (4-5 yrs)
- Ideal for graduates of Preschool Level 1 & 2 who would like an introduction to hockey.
- Prerequisite: Preschool Level 1 or beginner skating ability.
Hockey Skills: Level 1 (6-13 yrs)
- Beginner players learn the basic hockey skills including skating, shooting, stick handling and passing.
- Prerequisite: Learn to Skate Level 1 or beginner/intermediate skating ability
Hockey Skills: Level 2 (6-13 yrs)
- Hockey skills to include advanced skating drills, stick handling and shooting as well as general hockey concepts.
- Prerequisite: Hockey Skills Level 1 or intermediate / advanced skating ability.
Adult Hockey (19-59 yrs)
- Ideal for the first timer who would like an introduction to hockey. Fun environment to learn the basics including hockey concepts.
- Prerequisite: Learn to Skate Adult Level 1 or beginner / intermediate skating ability.
Goalie School (6-13 yrs)
- An introduction to learning the basics of goaltending. Instruction includes warm up exercises, proper form, skating, shooting and technical drills.
- Equipment Requirements: Full goalie equipment is required for all Hockey Skills courses.
Level 1
- Basic goalie skills; including skating, shooting and technical drills.
- Prerequisite: beginner/intermediate skating ability.
Level 2
- Intermediate goalie skills; including skating, crease management and advanced shooting & technical drills.
- Prerequisite: Goalie Skills Level 1 or 1 year plus goalie experience.
Instructional Hockey
- These programs are designed for participants that have achieved a competent level of skating and house league hockey experience.
- They will improve basic skating, shooting, stick handling and passing.
- Equipment Requirements: CSA approved hockey helmet with full facial protection and neck guards are mandatory, full equipment is highly recommended.
Hockey Skate & Score
- This program is designed to prepare children for entry into house league hockey.
- It is an introduction to the basics including skating, passing and puck control.
- Equipment Requirements: CSA approved hockey helmet with full facial protection and neck guards are mandatory, full equipment is highly recommended.
- Prerequisite: Child must be able to skate one width of the ice with a glide.
- Note: This is not a Learn to Skate program. It is assumed that participants have achieved an introductory level of skating ability.
Power Skating
- Instruction is provided in power development, power strides, starting, stopping, lateral mobility and power drills.
- Program designed for participants that have achieved a competent level of skating.
- Equipment Requirements: CSA approved hockey helmet with full facial protection and neck guards are mandatory, full equipment is highly recommended.
Power Skating: Levels 1-2 (8-15 yrs)

- This program will focus on forward slalom, side stops, backward one foot glides,

Level 2
- This program will focus on forward skating with running starts, backward skating
with crossover start, tight turns, stopping on cue, quick
direction change, two foot jumps forward to backward
and backward to forward, and forward one foot sculling.
Adult Power Skating
- Instruction is provided in power development, power strides,
starting, stopping, lateral mobility and power drills.
- Equipment Requirements: A CSA approved hockey helmet is mandatory, full equipment including face mask and neck guard is
highly recommended.
Adult Hockey School
- This program is designed to fit the needs of those participants
who are involved in recreational hockey and aims to refine
the skills which have been developed through playing.
- Equipment Requirements: Full equipment including CSA approved hockey helmets are mandatory, face masks and neck guards are highly recommended.
Pucks and Pylons/Hockey Skills & Drills for Boys & Girls (Various programs 6-13 years)
- Learn the basic fundamentals of hockey (primarily basic skating and puck handling skills).
- Program offered for children who are not playing in a hockey league.
- Participants must demonstrate competence in the following skills: skating forwards, backwards, simple turns and stops to participate in the program.
- Participants must provide their own hockey stick.
- Equipment Requirements: Participants must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet, full face mask and neck guard.
- Prerequisite: Learn to Skate: Level 2 or equivalent
Adult Power Skating & Hockey (18 yrs+)
- Power skating skills and drills – speed, agility and
co-ordination.
- Improve skating skills, hockey skills, game strategies and practice time.
- Equipment Requirements: Participants must provide their own hockey stick and wear a CSA approved hockey helmet with optional half or full visor and gloves (full equipment recommended).
Women’s Hockey School
Location: Mary McCormick Arena, 170 Brock Ave
League Goal: To create a fun and safe environment which
fosters inclusiveness, fair play and the development of
hockey skills for females.

- Program designed for youth who have taken Learn to
Skate Level 2 or equivalent skating experience.
Note: this is not a beginner skating program.
- Participants will be introduced to the basic fundamentals
of short track speed skating including skill development
and racing techniques.
- Participants must provide their own skates (hockey skates,
speed skates or figure skates will be accepted).
- Participants must provide their own CSA approved hockey
helmet, shinguards, knee pads, gloves and neck guard.
