Design Charrette
What is a Design Charette?
A charrette is an intense, short-term workshop that is a creative, participatory process intended to generate ideas, build consensus and solve issues within a particular community.
The design charrette for the Castlefield Caledonia Design and Décor District was held to develop a more appropriate, cohesive urban design framework for the area, to help enhance the market vibrancy and solidify the unique retail character of this area. The goal of the charrette is to produce a vision and implementation plan to address key development issues in the area. This includes determining how to:
- optimize and enhance existing retail patterns
- achieve adaptive reuse of existing industrial buildings
- harmoniously introduce new retail facilities
- improve the area streetscape and pedestrian environment
Process
The City Planning Division retained the planning and urban design firm of Brook McIlroy Inc./PACE Architects to prepare for and lead the charrette. The charrette was undertaken over a two-day period on May 10th and 11th, 2006 with participation from City staff and area stakeholders, including local landowners, businesses and residents.
Participants were divided into four teams. They focused on the urban structure and design features of the area, such as where new roads could be built, gateway entrance locations and enhancing the green space system. The teams also developed site specific concepts for key sites. Each team then prepared presentation materials to highlight the ideas generated throughout the two days.
A public meeting concluded the design charrette in the evening of May 11, 2006, where presentations were given to the public by each group. The public meeting also provided the opportunity to get feedback on each groups' concept for the area, answer questions and to advise the public of next steps the City will be taking.
