"Toronto Remembers"

June 6, 2001

WHEREAS: fifty-seven years ago today, the Allied invasion of Normandy was a daring and remarkable military feat that marked a turning point in the course of World War ll; and
WHEREAS: on June 6th, 1944, hundreds of thousands of men and women took part in what became the largest military invasion in history. The success of Operation Overlord led to the liberation of Occupied Europe and the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany; and
WHEREAS: we can take enormous pride in the fact that Canadians made up fully one-third of the combined air, naval and group forces taking part in the invasion; and
WHEREAS: units of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and the 4th Canadian Armoured Brigade were among those who stormed ashore that fateful morning. Canadian paratroopers were among the first to land in France in the early hours. Over fifty ships of the Royal Canadian Navy, including HMCS Haida, and thirty-seven squadrons of the Royal Canadian Air Force took part; and
WHEREAS: we pay tribute to D-Day veterans and to all Canadians who served overseas and at home during World War ll by remembering their courage and sacrifices.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim June 6, 2001 as "Toronto Remembers" in honour of the brave D-Day veterans and all Canadians who fought for peace and freedom.
