Human Rights Week
December 6 - 14, 2001
| WHEREAS: |
on December 10, 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations, an international pledge to recognize the inherent dignity and equal and intrinsic rights of all people; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Human Rights Week is a time to pay tribute to the principles of the Declaration and to reaffirm our commitment to social equity. The City of Toronto through its policies and programs, is committed to the elimination of racism, sexism, violence, homophobia, homelessness, hate crimes, hunger, illiteracy and barriers to access, participation and the fulfilment of human rights; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the ultimate goal of social development is to enhance the quality of life of all people, the City of Toronto's Social Development Strategy "encompasses principles of social equity, social well-being and citizen engagement, and is an important determinant of healthy communities and quality of life"; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Equity, Equality, Access, Participation and Cohesion are the five principles of the city's Social Development Strategy which guides the work of the City in the elimination of barriers to civic participation and to the empowerment of vulnerable communities across Toronto to realize their potential and combat discrimination and disadvantage; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto joins community groups and institutions in celebrating our efforts towards a civil society which assures freedom, justice and peace and in achieving human rights. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the more than 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim December 6 - 14, 2001 as "Human Rights Week" in the City of Toronto. |
