"Louie Riel Day"

November 16, 2001

WHEREAS: the Metis Nation are recognized in the Constitution Act 1982 as one of Canada's Aboriginal people with a homeland that extends throughout Ontario and the West; and and
WHEREAS: to the Metis people Louis Riel was a great humanitarian, statesman and leader; and
WHEREAS: November 16th is recognized as "Louis Riel Day" by the Metis Nation who celebrate their national holiday with commemorative ceremonies and events at various locations including Toronto City Hall and the Legislature at Queen's Park.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim November 16, 2001 as "Louis Riel Day" in the City of Toronto to recognize his contribution to the building of Canada.
