"National Access Awareness Week"

May 28 to June 3, 2001

WHEREAS: in the City of Toronto people with disabilities have the same inherent rights and obligations as all other residents to fully participate in and contribute to all aspects of community life; and
WHEREAS: the daily lives of people with disabilities are adversely affected by the barriers that exist in employment, public transportation, housing, recreation and communication, and
WHEREAS: over 17% of Toronto’s 2.4 million residents have some form of disability, and
WHEREAS: there is a need for greater awareness, understanding and recognition of the needs, capabilities and potential of people with disabilities, and
WHEREAS: the City of Toronto has been in the forefront of efforts to guarantee dignity and rights for all people and continues to work together with community groups to combat discrimination and ensure equality.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.4 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim May 28-June 3, 2001 as "National Access Awareness Week" and encourage everyone to support equal rights for persons with disabilities.
