"Poppy Weeks"

October 27 - November 11, 2001

WHEREAS: the poppy is a symbol we proudly wear in tribute to those many brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice; and
WHEREAS: the incredible loss of life in wartime must never be forgotten, and by remembering the many Canadians who gave their lives for our country we are given an opportunity to commit ourselves to lasting peace at home and around the world; and
WHEREAS: on November 11th each year, we gather as a community to remember and thank those who fought for peace and freedom overseas and on the home front; and
WHEREAS: in the City of Toronto, we honour and thank all the veterans who are with us, and pay tribute to the wartime sacrifices made by all Canadians.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor Mel Lastman, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim October 27 - November 11, 2001 as "Poppy Weeks"
